1. CP4 High-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure (2011–2019)

Symptoms:

  • Sudden crank/no-start or stalling
  • Loss of power with fuel system codes (e.g., P0087 – low fuel rail pressure)
  • Metal shavings found in the fuel filter or fuel system

Causes:

  • The Bosch CP4.2 pump is sensitive to poor fuel quality, water contamination, and low-lubricity diesel
  • A single lean-fuel event can score the pump internals and send metal debris through the injectors, rails, and lines

Fixes:

  • Install a CP4 bypass/disaster prevention kit to protect the fuel system before failure
  • Convert to the updated DCR-style pump used on 2020+ trucks
  • If the pump has already failed, complete fuel system replacement (pump, injectors, rails, lines) to remove all debris
  • Shorten fuel filter intervals and use a quality lubricity additive


2. Turbocharger Problems (Especially 2011–2014)

Symptoms:

  • Loss of power or slow spool
  • Whining, whistling, or grinding from the turbo
  • Excess smoke or turbo-related fault codes

Causes:

  • Early trucks used a dual-compressor-wheel turbo with ceramic ball bearings that don't hold up to hard use
  • Oil contamination and extended oil change intervals accelerate bearing wear

Fixes:

  • Upgrade early trucks to the stronger 2015+ style turbocharger or a proven aftermarket drop-in
  • Address oil feed/drain issues and stay on top of oil service
  • Full inspection of the charge air system while the turbo is out


3. EGR Cooler Clogging & Leaks

Symptoms:

  • Unexplained coolant loss with no visible leak
  • White smoke from the exhaust
  • Running hot under load

Causes:

  • Soot and carbon buildup restrict the cooler over time
  • Thermal stress cracks the cooler core, letting coolant into the exhaust stream

Fixes:

  • Replace with an updated or upgraded EGR cooler
  • Clean the EGR valve and intake tract while the system is apart
  • Cooling system service to protect the new cooler


4. DPF / DEF Emissions System Trouble

Symptoms:

  • Frequent or incomplete regens
  • “Exhaust Filter Full” messages or reduced-power derates
  • NOx sensor, EGT sensor, or DEF system fault codes

Causes:

  • Short trips and idle time load the DPF with soot faster than it can regenerate
  • Failed sensors, a clogged DPF, or DEF system faults trigger limp mode
  • Upstream problems (injectors, turbo, EGR) often overload the aftertreatment system

Fixes:

  • Proper diagnosis of the root cause before replacing parts
  • Forced regeneration or professional DPF cleaning/replacement
  • Replace failed NOx/EGT sensors and DEF components with quality parts
  • Fix upstream engine issues so the new parts last


5. Coolant Leaks & Cooling System Wear

Symptoms:

  • Low coolant warnings or frequent top-offs
  • Coolant smell or visible weeping at the radiator
  • Overheating while towing

Causes:

  • Primary radiators on these trucks are known to develop leaks with age
  • Degas bottles, hoses, and water pumps wear out under heavy-duty cycles

Fixes:

  • Pressure-test the system to pinpoint the leak
  • Replace the radiator with an updated unit
  • Complete cooling system service so the truck is ready to tow
